My Solid 3-5-2 Custom Route One Tactic with RC Strasbourg in FM22
In this article, I will present a successful FM22 custom route one tactic that I created with RC Strasbourg. FM22 defined Route One as “ The tactic that aims to play the furthest forward pass available, with the intent to penetrate the opposition’s penalty area as early as possible”. This tactic can work with teams like Wolves, Zebre, AC Milan, Chelsea and OM or you try it out with your team – just that you will need a target forward to carry it out effectively. Here we go with this my 3-5-2 Custom Route One tactic.
With no further ado, let’s get into the tactical details.
3-5-2 Custom Route One Tactic: Settings
Build Up
In the build-up phase, I decided not to play out of defence rather the goalkeeper should take direct kicks. The direct kick reaches the opposition’s half and it is focused at the centre. AS the goalkeeper takes the direct kick, my players overload the centre.
In the approach play, we can use the sides of the field or the middle to focus plays. I gave my players the creative freedom to be more expressive from their positions than disciplined. In the final third. We look for underlaps at both sides of the pitch than overlaps.
Attacking
The team attacking width is narrow. I set the passing directness to be much more directness as a route one tactic requires and also for the team to hit direct counterattacks on the break. While transiting to attacks, we do it at higher tempos.
In the goalkeeper instructions, I set the goalkeeper to either distribute quickly or slow the pace down. When he distributes, he does that by taking long kicks. In the final third, I instructed the team to shoot on sight or hit early crosses.
Defending
My team defends in a 5-3-2 shape. I instructed the team to defend narrower to force the opponents outside at wide areas. When we lose the ball, we either regroup or counter press to win back the ball. My team engages in hard tackles by getting stucked-in while tackling.
For the pressing strategy, we press opponents at a more often pressing intensity. Then we use a lower line of engagement and a standard defensive line to support the press.

Role Selections
GK
Matz Sels: Sels is a sweeper keeper on defence duty.
CBs
Alexander Djiku: Djiku is a ball-playing defender on cover duty. He stays behind the defensive line and covers the defensive areas against counterattacks.
Maxime Le Marchand and Anthony Caci: I made them both ball-playing defenders on defence duty. They will stay along the defensive line to close down opponents and prevent the ball from getting into the box. They are both equally comfortable with the ball.
WBs
Dimitri Lienard and Fredrick Guilbert: Lienard ad Guilbert are both wing-backs on support duties. I made wing-backs for the two to lead the attacks down the wing positions.
DM
Jean-Eudes Aholou: Aholou is a deep-lying playmaker on defence duty. I gave him the role because he has a good passing ability to help the team make good passing decisions at the midfield.
CMs
Adrien Thomasson and Jean Bellegarde: Thomasson and Bellegarde are mezzalas on support duties. They drift wide and operate at half-spaces. They both act as half-wingers on both sides of the field.
CFs
Ludovic Ajorque: Ajorque is a target forward on support duty. He has the height advantage to win aerial duels, and the physique to hold onto the ball and disrupt the opposition defenders thereby opening up space for the teammates to exploit.
Kevin Gameiro: Gameiro is a poacher. His main objective is to get into scoring channels to score goals for the team.
Team Mentality
At Home, an attacking mentality works best while on Away, a balanced mentality works best.
