Here, I will discuss another possible Napoli Tactic under Rudi Garcia, which he could use to begin his Napoli era next season. I mentioned that Napoli could line up in two possible tactics in the previous article, which are:

  • 4-2-3-1 Control Possession Tactic

The second possible tactic that Rudi Garcia could use to kick off next season, will be a 4-2-3-1 control possession tactic. Napoli is popularly known for their general possession control style of football, which was the style behind the success last season. So there’s a possibility that Rudi Garcia will continue the legacy of control possession in his style next season. With no addition, let’s get into the details.

Another Possible Napoli Tactic under Rudi Garcia | Tactical Instructions

In Possession

Building up from behind will still be implemented, as required for a successful control possession. During build-up play, the central defenders will still drop close to the goalkeeper vertically inside the box. The fullbacks will stay wide and ready to attack. Lobotka will still form a single pivot outside the box while Zielinski and Anguissa will form double pivots, just above Lobotka.

In the approach plays, Napoli will mainly use the central area of the field, to focus their plays. The Blues will dominate the possession mostly, with shorter passing directness at lower-tempo ball movements. The players will choose to dribble less or run at the opposition defence, while in possession. Lastly, they will either look for overlaps or underlaps on both sides of the field, as they come close to the opposition box.

In Transition

The attacking wide shall be standard. If Naples wins the ball on the break, they will choose either to hit counterattacks or hold shape and patiently build up an attack – if they choose counterattacks, their counters will be fluid. Furthermore, in the final third Napoli will still mainly work the ball into the box.

When they lose the ball, Garcia’s men will also counterpress to win back the ball quickly in the opposition’s half. When the goalkeeper saves the ball, this time, he will distribute the ball quickly or after slowing the pace down, and then distribute it by taking short kicks to the centre backs.

Out Of Possession

Napoli will defend in a 4-4-2 shape. Garcia will now prefer his defenders to remain compact, forcing opponents outside rather than inside. The defensive players will also step up the defensive line, to compress the opponent’s attackers forcing them to lose possession higher up. The fullbacks will try to close down closes.

They will press opponents higher, at a more often pressing intensity. The line of engagement will be higher and they will still press to close down goalkeeper distributions. The defensive line will be also higher. The video below shows their defensive shapes.

Formation Lineup

Another Possible Napoli Tactic under Rudi Garcia | Role Selections

Many of the roles are the same as those of the previous version, only a few players have different roles here.

DM

Zambo Anguissa will be a segindo volante on support duty. He will always get forward during attacks, frequently surging into the opposition box to attack the ball in the final third. Anguissa will also tracked to protect the defensive line. With the ball, Anguissa will take more risky passes and shoot the ball from a distance often.

AM

Zielinski will be an attacking midfielder on attack duty. He will be focused on the attacking side of the game, staying higher up the pitch to craft chances for chances for teammates, as well as making himself available in the box. Zielinski will also take more shots from a distance and have the freedom to roam.

W

Politano was my preferred right winger in this version, with the role of an inverted winger on support duty.

Team Mentality

I use a positive mentality at Home except against tougher teams, where I will switch to an attacking mentality.

Then on Away matches, I always switch to a balanced mentality.
