In terms of the tactical setup of the team, Vincent Kompany used his normal 4-2-3-1 tactic with almost the same lineup – the only difference was Urbig replacing the injured Manuel Neuer. The tactical instructions were a little different from the one on the first leg, so let’s get into the details of the tactic.
Vincent Kompany Tactic vs Bayer 04 | Tactical Setups
In Possession
Bayern Munich played out of defence, for most of the game. During the build-up, the central defenders, Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae supported Urbig, with width inside the box. Laimer and Davies spread wide at the flanks, to provide outleg options to the goalkeeper. Kimmich and Goretzka formed double pivots outside the box, to create more passing options for the defenders.

The German Reds focused on play mainly through the sides of the pitch, more than they used through the middle of the pitch, just like in the first leg. In terms of passing, Bayern used shorter passing directness but they only dominated the possession of the first half. The tempo at which they circulated the ball was standard. They then used underlaps on both sides of the field, as they approached Leverkusen’s box.
In Transition
Well, in the transition, the attacking width was wide. In transition, Davies and Laimer stayed wide on both flanks. Kimmich stayed back and sometimes dropped too close to the CDs, while Goretzka moved further towards Leverkusen’s box. Harry Kane dropped from his position, to play teammates. Musiala operated centrally while Coman and Olise flanked him.

Furthermore, when the team won the ball on the break, they mostly transitioned to counterattacks. In the final third, Bayern Munich worked the ball into the box patiently. When Bayern Munich lost possession in Leverkusen’s half, they counter-pressed in the 1st half but in the second half, they were regrouping to their own half.
Out Of Possession
In the defensive phase of the game, Kompany wanted his defenders to stay compact, forcing Leverkusen outside, as they did in the first leg. The defenders stepped up the defensive line, to compress Leverkusen’s half, but they were dropping off the defensive line after they scored the 2nd goal.

Kompany’s men pressed at a more intensity when Bayer Leverkusen played out of their defence. Furthermore, their line of engagement was higher, while the defensive line was also higher.
