Spread the love

Brighton are having the best season in their Premier League history under Graham Potter. Graham Potter was appointed at the beginning of 2019/2020 and he has always been a fan of a back-three system of football. He still uses a back 3 system in a 3-4-2-1 formation in the current season. Hence, in the post, I will discuss FM22 Graham Potter 3-4-2-1 tactic with Brighton & Hove Albion. So let’s get into the details of the details.

FM22 Graham Potter 3-4-2-1: Tactical Instructions

Build Up

So far this season, Graham Potter’s Brighton has two ways of building up plays which are taking direct kicks and playing out of the defence. When they are under pressure or while facing tougher opponents, they are more likely to go direct. But when they are confident and comfortable with the ball, they decide to play out of the defence. The picture below depicts how the team play out of defence.

As they progress with the play, Albion focus their mostly through the sides of the field due to the wing- backs carry out their attacks mostly. In the creative freedom, Brighton at times, appears to be expressive or disciplined from their positions – which is why I didn’t set a particular setting there.

Attacking

The team’s attacking width is somewhat standard. Albions can use shorter passes or direct passes during attacks, plus their ball movements are at higher tempos. Moreover, Brighton do go for counter attacks on the break.

In the final third, they prioritize overlaps at the both sides of the pitch than underlaps. Then they are more likely to shoot on sight than working the ball into the box or hitting early crosses.

Defending

Albion defend in 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 shape. They defend narrower to keep the opposition players outside at the wide areas. When Brighton lose the possession of the ball, they try to quickly regroup to their own half and form a defensive wall.

Graham instructs his men to press the opponents at a more often intensity, plus they use higher line of engagement and higher defensive line to support the press. The team equally engages in tighter marking.

Role Selections

GK

Robert Sanchez: Sanchez is a goalkeeper on defend duty.

CDs

Lewis Dunk and Joel Veltman: Dunk and Veltman are both ball playing defenders on defend duty. They both stay within the defensive line to break up attacks and close down the attackers. Veltman does stay wide to close down opponents in the absence of the right wing-back.

Marc Cucurella: Cucurella in this position is a wide centre defender on attack duty. He acts as complete wing-back during attack and does attack from inside or run down the flank to cross the ball or shoot. Cucurella still carry out his defensive duties comfortably.

WBs

Leandro Trossard and Solly March: Trossard and March are inverted wing-backs on attack duties. The two functions as inverted wingers as they cut inside from the flank and run into the box. The two offer less to the team defensive shape.

Marc Cucurella and Tarig Lamptey: Cucurella and Lamptey are complete wing-backs on attack and support duties respectively. They are both attacking minded, they have good dribbling and flair abilities but Cucurella has more attacking inclination while Lamptey tries to balance his attacking and defensive duties.

CMs

Moises Caicedo: Caicedo is a ball-winning midfielder on support duty. His primary objective to close down opponents and win the ball higher up the pitch. At times he joins the team during attacks.

Yves Bissouma: Bissouma is a box-to-box midfielder. He gets forward to support the team during attacks, arriving late into the box to get the end of a cross. Bissouma equally tracks back to protect the defensive line.

AMs

Alexis Marc Allister: Marc Allister is a advanced playmaker on support duty. He has the creative ability to set up attacking chances for the team during attacks and does create scoring chances in the final third.

Enock Mwepu: Mwepu is an attacking midfielder on support duty. He operates higher up the pitch and does fashion chances for himself or the team in the final third.

CF

Danny Welbeck: Welbeck is a poacher. He does play simple passes to bring his teammates into play and does not offer much while setting up scoring chances. He just positions himself in a scoring channel.

Team Mentality

At Home, I use attacking mentality while at Away, I switch to a balanced mentality.
