Here’s the best fm23 Eddie Howe tactic I have created and tested. Since my previous tactic about Eddie Howe’s style of play with Newcastle United which was in FM22. Newcastle has gone from a team struggling to stay in the top half of the team to the 2022/2023 Premier League title contender and this is due to the amazing job of what Eddie Howe has done with this team. Howe’s side is currently 3rd on the table with 7 points behind the top-placed Arsenal.

The questions to be asked now are, will remain in the top four or will they go ahead and win the trophy? Well, the answers to those questions will be provided at the end of the season. Until then let’s get into the details of their FM23 tactical replica, shall we?

Best FM23 Eddie Howe Tactic | Tactical Setups

In Possession

Howe mostly wants his men to build play patiently from behind and this has good success rate this season. But when then the team are under a lot of pressure, the goalkeeper has the green light to go for direct kicks. When they play out of the defence, The central defenders will always spread inside the box, and Burn and Trippier will spread wide at the flanks, providing out-leg passing options to the goalkeeper. Bruno will drop deep to provide a numerical advantage over the opposition attackers while Willock and Joelintin will form a pivot above him.

Eddie Howe’s side seems like a gegenpress team which is why their passing directness is at standard nut at the highest tempo – at times they reduce the tempo, especially against tougher teams. They prefer to play through the sides of the pitch than the middle and they do use wider attacking width to stretch the opposition’s defence. As they approach the opponent’s box the team can look for either underlaps or overlaps on both sides of the pitch.

In Transition

Newcastle attacks in numbers, Howe wants at least 6 of players heading to the opponent’s box. The deepest midfielder, Bruno normally doesn’t hold his position, rather he gets forward to support the attack. Sometimes the left-back, Burn will form a back with the other centre-backs while Trippier has the freedom to roam and sometimes roams to midfield in order to find space where he can be more creative.

In addition, Newcastle can also be devastating on the break, as they always tend hit counterattacks, considering the electrifying paces of the wingers, Saint-Maximin and Almiron. In the final third, Newcastle had any available option to get the ball in the back of the net which is why I didn’t select a particular instruction there. Finally, When the Magpies lose possession while in transition, they quickly apply counter press to win the ball in the opponent’s half.

Out Of Possession

Their aim when they are out of possession is to keep pressuring the opponents which is why the pressing strategy is very intense at the highest intensity. Furthermore, Newcastle is the lowest-conceding team in the Premier League this season before Arsenal, this is due to the incredible defensive display of their back-four, Burn, Botman, Schar and Trippier. Their line of engagement and defensive line are both set up higher.

In addition, They do trap outside by remaining compact in defensive situations. The defenders can either step up their defensive lines or drop off the defensive line depending on the situation.

FM23 Eddie Howe Tactic | Role Selections

GK

The goalkeeper, Nick Pope is a sweeper keeper on defence duty.

CDs

The centre-half defenders under Eddie Howe are ball-playing defenders on defence duties. They have the great passing range to launch defence-splitting passes to find higher-positioned teammates. In defensive situations, They will stay within the defensive line to break up attackers, mark attackers and prevent the ball from getting into the box. Botman and Schar are the first choices for the positions.

FBs

At the left back, Burn is a traditional fullback on support duty. He is naturally a centre-defender deployed as a side-back. He is very conscious but ready to get forward when required to support the attack which is very I left his instruction at default. Targett is a wing-back on support duty like in the previous tactic.

Trippier on the right is a complete wing-back on support. He is a creative fullback in this team, similar to what Alexander Arnold does at Liverpool, Trippier can literally do anything to impact the attacking phase of the team, but does offer width at the right flank.

DM

At the deepest midfield, Bruno Guimaraes is a deep-lying playmaker on support duty. The Brazilian playmaker controls the game, switches play side to side and then gets forward to support the attack.

CMs

In the central midfield position, Willock and Joelinton are the main men for the job but since Saint-Maximin got injured, Longstaff steps in when either of them gets deployed as the left winger.

Willock and Joelinton are both mezzalas on support duties. They frequently get into the opposition’s box to attack the ball, they mainly operate in half-spaces and do move into channels often. The two drift wide to stretch the defences as half-wingers/half-midfielders.

Longstaff on the other hand is a box-to-box midfielder that supports the team both in offensive and defence situations.

Ws

At the left wing, Saint-Maximin is an inverted winger on support. He will cut inside while overloading a retreating defender and creating space for the fullback to exploit. Since he got injured, Murphy, Fraser, Joelinton or Willock has stepped in for him.

On the right, Miguel Almiron is an inside forward on support duty. He can sit narrow and hug the touchline waiting for the ball and then cuts inside and runs at the central defenders to score or pass the ball. Almiron equally has the freedom from his positions.

CFs

At the centre forward position since Isak got injured, Callum Wilson has been in his best form. Callum Wilson is an advanced forward. He leads the attacking lines, looking to spearhead the attacks as he can score or assist in the final third.

Chris Wood is a target forward on support duty. He has the strength and balance to win duels and lays it off to an onrushing team. He does drop to pick up the ball, disrupting the defenders against the ball before laying it off. Isak is still an attacking pressing forward.

Team Mentality

At Home, a positive mentality works better for lower and average teams, but when I face tougher teams, I switch to an attacking mentality.

On Away, a balanced mentality works best against all teams.
