FM23 Control Possession Tactic | FM23 Classic 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree with Wolves

Here we present our best FM23 control possession tactic. Control Possession is another possession-holding tactic in football, similar to tiki-taka and vertical tiki-taka. But the difference between control possession and the two tiki-taka is that control possession will involve counterattacks and holding shape during transitions, unlike the two tiki-takas that need only one of those.

FM23 defines control possession as a “tactic that focuses on retaining possession and pressing high to win the ball back. Looks to play out of defence and create chances through patient, short-passing build-up play”. The custom control possession tactics that I’m about to introduce to you which are in fact under my FM23 Custom Tactical Series are two versions as my tradition demands, which are:

• Classic 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree

• Asymmetric 4-1-4-1 version

The first version, classic 4-3-2-1 will be detailed in this article while the next article will be based on the second version. This 4-3-2-1 version has no defensive midfielder but rather three central midfielders. The team I chose to test this tactic with was Wolverhampton Wanderers but as always you can try it with your team. With that being said, let’s dive into the details of the tactic.
