In this post, I will discuss a replica of the FM23 Max Allegri 3-5-2 tactic. Just like Inter Milan, Juve struggled at the beginning of the season to the point that they were eliminated from Uefa Champions League. They are heading to the Uefa Europa League because they finished 3^rd in their group – below Paris Saint-Germain.

Also at the beginning of the season, Allegri tried a 4-3-3 but he later settled with this 3-5-2 tactic. With this tactic, Juventus won all of their last five matches before the World Cup break and equally kept clean sheets in all of these matches. With that great run of form, I decided to create their replica in FM23, so let’s get into the details.

In Possession

Juventus, like most modern football teams, build up play from behind and advance to the opponent’s half. During the building-up phase, the back-3 will spread across the box close to the goalkeeper, the deepest midfielder will drop to provide vertical passing options to the defenders while the wing-backs will spread wide at the flanks immediately after the ball leaves the box. In addition, the two central midfielders will form a pivot above the DM.

The Old Lady focuses their play mainly through the sides of the pitch than through the middle, this stretches the opposition’s defence wider. Max Allegri wants his men to be more disciplined in their position rather than being expressive. As Juvemen arrive close to the box, they mostly look for overlaps on both sides of the field.

In Transition

In the attacking phase, the old lady uses a wider attacking width. Moreover, Juventus goes for counterattacks on break, their counters are direct counterattacks due to their use of slightly more direct passing directness and at slightly higher tempos.

In the final third, they mostly shoot on sight or hit early crosses and they barely work their way into their opposition box. When Allegri’s lose the possession of the ball, they are more likely to regroup to their own half than counter-pressing.

Out OF Possession

Allegri’s men defend in 5-3-2. The wing-backs will track back and form a defensive back-5, followed by their 3-man midfielders while the two strikers will lead the press. Juve can defend compact to force the opponents wider or defend wider to force the opponents inside but defending wider works better in FM23 – which is why I enabled the ‘trap inside” option.

In the pressing strategy, Max Allegri employs a higher line of engagement and a higher defensive line. The defenders equally drop off more the defensive line to reduce their vulnerability of giving up space behind. Furthermore, the pressing intensity is at a more often intensity. Lastly, the wing-backs try to close down crosses than inviting them.

GK

The goalkeeper, Szczesny is a sweeper keeper on defence duty.

CDs

Allegri’s deepest defender, Bremer is a balling-playing defender on cover duty. He is very confident with the ball and can move with the ball or pass to higher-positioned teammates. In defensive situations, he is sit behind the defensive line to clear through balls and crosses. Bonucci can come in his absence.

Gatti and Rugani on the sides are equally ball-playing defenders on defence duties. They will stay within the defensive line to close down the opponent’s opponents and break up attacks.

On the other hand, Alex Sandro and Danilo are wide-centre backs on attack and support duties respectively. They operate as fullbacks during attacks but Sandro is more attacking-minded than Danilo.

WBs

On the left wing-back position, Kostic is a wing-back on support duty. He will spread wide during attacks, eager to beat their markers and cross the ball from the flanks. He equally returns to cover their defensive duties in defensive situations. I use Chiesa as an attacking inverted wingback on the attack after his injury problems.

Cuadrado on the right is a complete wing-back on support duty. He stays wide during attacks, ready to run at the defence with the ball towards the box to cross or score inside the box, plus he has the freedom to roam from his position often.

DM

The defensive midfielder, Locatelli is a deep-lying playmaker on defence duty. He is a creative player as he dictates tempo, switches plays, and recycles possession while holding his position during attacks.

CMs

Rabiot as a central midfielder is a carrilero. In the attacking phase of the game, Rabiot attacks from the left side of the field while in a defensive situation, he equally does his defensive duties at the side of the field.

Weston Mckennie is a mezzala on support duty. He is ready to get into the opposition’s box to attack the ball, he equally operates in half-spaces and does his defensive duties higher up the pitch. Fagioli is his perfect substitute in case of injury or fatigue.

CFs

At first, Vlahovic and Milik are paired at the centre-forward position, but in the last few games, Milik and Kean were paired as strikers. Milik is a target forward on support duty. He has the strength and balance to win duels and lays it off to an onrushing team. He does drop to pick up the ball, disrupting the defenders against the ball before laying it off

Vlahovic is a pressing forward on attack duty. He leads the pressing lines of the team, pressing the opposition defenders, leaving the opponent little space to build up. Furthermore, he’s more focused on running into balls behind the defence and he has that pace that increases his success rate.

Kean on the other hand is an advanced forward. To put the ball at the back of the net is mainly Kean’s job, just like a Poacher. But, he also tends to support and pass to teammates in the final third.
