In this post, I will look into FM23 PSG tactics this season. Christophe Galtier as PSG head coach uses two main tactics with PSG this season and they are all asymmetric tactics:

Asymmetric 3-4-2-1 version

Asymmetric 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree version

This post will be based on the asymmetric 3-4-2-1 version. This asymmetric 3-4-2-1 is a different version of the PSG 3-4-2-1 tactic this season from the one I made back in FM22 about their style of play this season here. This FM23 version is asymmetric because of Mbappe’s role as the left-centre forward that loves to stay at the left during tactics. With that being pointed out, I will explain better the details of the tactic, so let’s get into it.

FM23 PSG Tactics | Tactical Instructions

In Possession

Galtier mostly wants his men to build play patiently from behind and this has good success rate this season. But when then the team are under a lot of pressure, the goalkeeper has the option to go for direct kicks. When they play out of the defence, The central defenders will always spread inside the box, The wing-backs will spread wide, providing out-leg options to the goalkeeper while the central midfielders, Veratti and Vitinha will drop close to the box providing numerical advantages against the opposition forwards.

PSG still prefer to focus their plays through the middle of the pitch. PSG uses a shorter passing directness at higher tempo ball movements due to their being a vertical tiki-taka team. Furthermore, Galtiers gives his men room to be expressive rather than disciplined. Finally, they look for overlaps on both sides of the pitch as they approach the opposition’s box.

In Transition

While in transition, the attacking width is wider. During attacks, The central defenders will step close to the halfway line, sometimes above the line. The wing-backs, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi will push further up at the flanks, Mbappe will stay wide mainly when the team is attacking from the left side, and sometimes Neymar joins him there. Messi has the whole central area to operate while Vitinha gets forward, and Verratti holds his position.

Further more, The Parisians(PSG) still go for counterattacks on the break and their counterattacks are fluid counterattacks. In the final third, Paris Saint-Germain works the ball into the box often. Lastly, when the Paris blues lose possession of the ball, they mostly apply frontline pressures by counter-pressing to win the ball back in the opponent’s half.

Out Of Possession

In the defensive phase, Galtier’s men defend in 5-2-3 a shape. They equally protected their central areas by sitting compact with their trapping outside strategy which eventually forces the opponents outside. Furthermore, the defenders do step up the defensive line to compress the opponent’s half, leaving little roam to play.

In the pressing strategy, Galtier employs a higher line of engagement and a higher defensive line. Furthermore, the pressing intensity is more often intensity – plus they prevent the goalkeeper’s distribution but not always. Lastly, the wing-backs, Nuno Mendes and Hakimi try to close down crosses than inviting them.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, Mbappe is left centre forward that loves to stay at the left wing waiting for the ball to drive forward with the ball, spearheading attacks and exploiting space when without the ball. I feel he is more like an advanced forward than a complete forward with instructions to stay wide.
