Rudi Garcia 4-3-3 Tactic with Napoli | FM23 2023-24 Season
In the article, I will discuss the Rudi Garcia 4-3-3 tactic with Napoli, since he took over as head coach. Napoli made a good start to the Serie A season, winning against Frosinone and Sassuolo, before their perfect start was cut short with the loss against Sarri; ‘s Lazio.
The 4-3-3 tactic has been Garcia’s main tactical style, which proves my second prediction of Napoli’s tactic right ahead of this season. The FM23 replica of this tactic has been pivotal to our success in the game, According to the stats, we scored the most in the league and conceded the fewest. With no further delay, let’s get into the details of the tactics.

In Possession
Firstly, starting plays from behind is their first strategy from a goal kick, even when they are under pressure. During build-up play, the central defenders, Juan Jesus and Rahmani will drop close to the goalkeeper vertically inside the box. The fullbacks, Olivera and Di Lorenzo will stay wide and ready to attack. Just above the box lies Lobotka, who will form a single pivot outside the box, with Zielinski and Anguissa forming double pivots, just above Lobotka.
In the approach plays, Napoli mainly uses the vast areas of the field, to focus their plays. The Blues do dominate the possession immensely, with much shorter passing directness at slightly higher tempo ball movements. The players will choose to either dribble less or run at the opposition defence, while in possession. Lastly, they will look for underlaps on both sides of the field, as they come close to the opposition box.

In Transition
The attacking width is wide. If the Naples win the ball on the break, they will go for counterattacks quickly – their counters will be fluid. Furthermore, in the final third Napoli mainly works the ball into the box.
When they lose the ball, Garcia’s men counter-press to win back the ball quickly in the opposition’s half. When the goalkeeper catches the ball, he will distribute the ball quickly or after slowing the pace down, and then distribute it by rolling it out.

Out Of Possession
Napoli will defend in a 4-5-1 shape. They will press opponents higher, at a more often pressing intensity. The line of engagement is higher and they will press opposition immediately, they make the first pass inside their box. The defensive line will be also higher. The video below shows their defensive shapes.
Garcia wants his defenders to stay compact, forcing opponents outside than inside. The defensive players also step up the defensive line, to compress the opponent’s attackers forcing them to lose possession higher up. The fullbacks will try to close down closes.

Gk
The goalkeeper, Meret is a sweeper keeper on support duty.

CDs
Jesus and Rrahmani are ball-playing defenders on defence duties respectively. They will stay within the defensive line to close down opposition attackers and win the ball. The two will turn the defence via diagonal passes to higher positioned teammates, to initiate attacks.

FBs
Olivera is a wing-back on support duty. He will get forward at the left-wing flank when the team get into transition. With the ball, Olivera will often run at his marker and hit crosses from the flank.

Di Lorenzo is a complete wing-back on support duty. He will provide the team with extra width at the right flank, making overlapping or underlapping runs in the final third. Also in transition, Di Lorenzo will have the freedom to roam from his positions often and then take more risky passes.
DM
Lobotka is a deep-lying playmaker on defence duty. He holds his position at deeper positions, during attacks at the midfield, dictating tempos and supporting offensive teammates with diagonal passes. Lobotka also provides an outlet for recycling possession at the midfield.

CMs
Zielinski will be a mezzala on support duty. During the team’s transitions, he will drift wide and in half-spaces acting as a half-winger/half-midfielder. In the final third, Zielinski will always make him available inside the box, to find scoring opportunities. ‘

Zambo Anguissa is a traditional central midfielder on support duty. He will get forward during attacks, through the central areas of the field. Anguissa will also take creative passes, tackle harder and shoot from a distance often. Cajute is a box-to-box midfielder in their first match of the Serie A season.
Ws
Kvaratskhelia is an inside forward on support duty. He will stay wider at the left wing, ready to cut inside and run at the centre of opposition defenders. Raspadori is an inverted winger on support duty. He will take risky passes and roam from his position often.

Politano is an inverted winger on support duty. He will stay wider during attacks, looking to receive the ball and cut inside with his left foot into the final third, while creating space for Di Lorenzo to exploit the right flank. Lozano will be a winger on support duty.

CFs
Victor Osimhen is an advanced forward. When Napoli is in attacking transitions, Osimhen will sit on the shoulder of the last defender, to attack through balls played behind. Simeone is a target forward on attack duty.

Team Mentality
I use a positive mentality at Home except against tougher teams, where I will switch to an attacking mentality, especially at the Champions League.
Then on Away matches, I always switch to a balanced mentality.
