In Possession

First off, Spurs start off plays from behind, which rarely goes directly from, except against tougher teams. While playing from behind, the central-halves, Van de Ven and Romero will drop close to the goalkeeper, inside the 18-yard box. Udogie and Porro will tuck inside at the flanks, to overload the central areas with Bissouma. Sarr will stay wide at the right flank as a partial right fullback. In some cases, Udogie and Porro will stay wide at the flanks, while Bissouma and Sarr form double pivots above the box – this is the type of build-up that can be achieved in FM24.

In the approach play, Tottenham can focus on plays either through the middle of the field or down the flanks of the pitch. The passing directness is shorter to control possession mainly, at standard tempo, to build up transition a little quicker or patiently do that. Furthermore, Postecoglou gives the creative players the freedom to be more expressive. As they approach the final third, Tottenham will prioritize underlaps on both sides of the field.

In Transition

The attacking width is wide. While in transition, the centre defenders, Van de Ven and Romero will push higher up, above the halfway line. Udogie and Porro will be extra central midfielders with Bissouma, by tucking inside – this forces Maddison will drift a little wider towards the left flank. Sarr will stay wide at the right flank as a partial right fullback. Richarlison and Kulusevski will stay wider at the flanks. Son will lead the attacking lines. In some cases, Sarr will be the extra midfielder, with Bissouma, while Porro becomes the right fullback. In the final third, Spurs will patiently work the ball into the box often.

Also in transition, if Postecoglou’s men lose the ball in the opposition’s half, they counterpress to win back possession quickly. The goalkeeper, Vicario will distribute the ball quickly, by rolling out the ball often.

Out Of Possession

In the defensive phase, the defenders will stay compact, forcing the opponents outside than inside. The defenders will also step up the defensive line, to compress the opponent’s half. The fullbacks will try to close down crosses from the opponents.

In defensive situations, they can defend in a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 shape. They will press opponents higher, at a more often pressing intensity, with a higher line of engagement and the defensive line will also be higher – Spurs will also press to close down goalkeeper’s distributions but not all the time.

Role Selections

Gk

The goalkeeper, Vicario is a sweeper keeper on support duty.

CDs

Van de Ven and Romero are ball-playing defenders on defence duties respectively. They will stay within the defensive line to close down opposition attackers and win the ball. They will turn the defence via diagonal passes to higher-positioned teammates.

FBs

Iyenoma Udogie is an inverted wing-back on support duty. He will tuck inside at the left flank, with the inclination to overload the midfield. Across the final third, Udogie can still run down the left flank to cross the ball.

Pedro Porro is an inverted winger on support duty. He will drift inside during attacks as an extra centre midfielder together with Bissouma as I mentioned before, when the team gets forward to attack. In some cases, he will stay wide as a traditional wing-back. Porro will also take risky passes and cross the ball often.

CMs

Pape Sarr is a carrilero. During attacks, he will push further to support other offensive players in wide areas as a partial fullback, surging late into the box to get the end of an attack. In some cases, he operates centrally during attack and Sarr will also return to close down the attack and protect the defensive line.

Bissouma is a ball-winning midfielder on support duty. He is the deepest midfielder in this team, He will close down attackers and win the ball at the midfield. With the ball, Bissouma will drive forward the ball centrally with the ball and also gets close to the box to find scoring opportunities.

AM

James Maddison is an advanced playmaker on support duty. He does his creative works in advanced positions like creating goal-scoring chances in the final third and switching plays from side to side. Maddison also has the freedom to roam from the midfield to the attacking areas and the flanks to connect with teammates and find scoring chances.

Ws

On the left wing, Richarlison is an inverted winger on support duty. He will stay wider during attacks, looking to receive the ball and cut inside with his right foot into the final third, while opening up space for Udogie or Maddison to exploit at the left flank. Solomon or Johnson is also an inverted winger on support duty in this position.

Kulusevski is an inverted winger on support duty. He will stay wider during attacks, looking to receive the ball and cut inside with his left foot into the final third, while creating space for Porro or Sarr to overload the right flank. Kulusevski will also shoot from a distance often and cross the ball often from deeper positions.

CF

Son is a pressing forward on attack duty. He will press higher to close down opposition defenders and the goalkeeper when they are in possession. Son will also lead the attacking lines, making runs behind the defensive lines.

Team Mentality

At Home, a positive mentality works better for lower, and average teams, but against tougher opponents, I switch to an attacking mentality.

On Away, a balanced mentality works best against average and tougher teams.
