Here’s FM24 Enzo Maresca 4-2-3-1 for the new season. Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea this season have been fantastic this season, I can say they are the best Chelsea team that I have seen since Thomas Tuchel’s team. In this 24-25 season, the Blues have only recorded a loss in the Premier League and they are currently in the top 4 of the league table, for the first time since Thomas Tuchel.

For their tactical approach, Enzo Maresca uses a 4-2-3-1 asymmetric tactic, as I predicted that he would before the season kicked off. In the setup, if the fullbacks were Cucurella and Gusto, then Cucurrella would form a back-3 with the central defenders. In the case where Gusto, wasn’t present like against West Ham, Fofana who replaced the right fullback, was forming a back-3 with the central defenders. With no further ado, let’s get into the details of the tactic.

In Possession

Building up from behind is the basic build-up style, a few times Sanchez does take direct kicks. During the build-up play, Colwill and Fofana will drop close to the goalkeeper inside the box. While the fullbacks Cucurella and Gusto, will stay wide on the flanks and ready to attack. Caicedo will form double pivots with Fernandez just outside the box.

In the approach plays, the blues now focus their plays through the middle of the field, sometimes they use the flanks. Chelsea aims to dominate the possession through shorter passing directness, but the tempo is standard – their creative freedom will be expressive. Lastly, they look for either overlaps or underlaps on both sides of the field.

In Transition

The attacking side is still going to be wide. This Chelsea team is also good at counterattacks, their counterattacks are fluid counters. In the final third, the Blues work the ball into the box of the opponents.

When they lose the ball, Chelsea will counter-press to win back the ball quickly, in higher positions.

Out Of Possession

Chelsea can defend in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 shape. They will press opponents higher as you can see in the video version, plus their pressing intensity is more often. The line of engagement is higher and they press to cross goalkeeper distributions sometimes. The defensive line will be much higher when the opponents are with the ball in their half.

Maresca also prefers his defenders to remain compact, forcing opponents outside rather than inside. The defensive players also step up the defensive line, to compress the opponent’s attackers forcing them to lose possession higher up.

Gk

Sanchez is a sweeper keeper on support duty.

CDs

The preferred centre-backs, are Colwill and Fofana. The two are ball-playing defenders but on cover and defence duties respectively. Colwill stays behind the defensive line, to mark attackers and close down them down, while Fofana will stay within the defensive line, to carry out his defensive duties.

Cucurella is a wide centre-back on support duty. He will form a back-3 with Colwill and Fofana, then get forward in the manner of a left fullback to support the attacks of Chelsea. In the game against West Ham, Fofana was the wide centre-back on support but at the right side of the defence.

WB

Gusto is an inverted wing-back on support duty. He leaves the right flank and moves to the midfield to join Enzo and Caicedo, as the Blues set up attacking movements. Across the ball, Gusto can make underlapping or overlapping runs. In the game against West Ham, Cucurella was the inverted wing-back on support duty, but at the left flank.

DM

Caicedo is a defensive midfielder on defence duty in this version. He will intercept passes, close down opponents and help the team maintain possession. Caicedo will stay deeper during attacks, to protect the midfield against counterattacks.

Enzo Fernandez is a deep-lying playmaker on support duty. He will bring out control at the midfield, dictating the tempo, switching play side to side and then advancing further towards the opposition box during attacks.

AM

Cole Palmer is an advanced playmaker on support duty. He is a wonderful definition of an advanced playmaker, as his sole effort is to improve the attacking threats of the team. Plamer drops deep to connect with teammates, switches play side to side, plays killer passes to create chances, and gets into the box to find scoring chances.

Ws

Sancho and Madueke are inverted wingers on support duties on the left and right flanks respectively. They stay wide on both sides of the field, to receive the ball and cut inside towards the opposition, to shoot or create chances. Sancho has been fantastic since he came to Stamford Bridge. Neto on the left wing, is a winger on support duty.

CF

Nicolas Jackson is an advanced forward. He is the highest-positioned Chelsea player during attacks, chasing down through balls or lose balls and sometimes drops a little deep to offer layoffs to on rushing teammates. With the ball, Jackson run at the opposition last defenders.
