Here’s FM24 Michel asymmetric tactic with Girona FC so far. Michel’s Girona are still the most impressive team in Laliga EA Sports. The way this team plays is very beautiful to watch, they play quick games with composure and bravery, as they stick to their plan till the end of the game. At the beginning of the season, Girona were more of a 4-3-3 team, recently they are more of a 3-4-3 team both tactics being asymmetric – Which is why I created two versions of Michel’s tactic.

  • 4-3-3 Asymmetric Tactic

I will discuss the 4-3-3 asymmetric tactic in this article. In the setup, Blind, David Lopez and Eric Garcia are the back-3, while Couto will push to the right wing-back position. With that being addressed, let’s dive into the details.

In Possession

Firstly, Girona starts plays from the goal kick, even when they are under pressure – they occasionally go for direct kicks. During build-up play, the central defenders, David Lopez and Eric Garcia will drop close to the goalkeeper, giving him a width inside the box. Blind and Couto will stay wide and ready to attack. Aleix Garcia will drop close to the box, while Martin and Herrera will form double pivots above him.

In the approach plays, Girona mainly uses the wide areas of the field, to focus their plays often than the middle of the pitch. The white and Reds dominate the possession immensely, with shorter passing directness at a higher tempo ball movements. Lastly, Gironistes will look for overlaps on the right side of the field, as they come close to the opposition box, while either looking for overlaps or underlap on the left side.

In Transition

The attacking width is wide. During the transition, Blind and the two central defenders will form a back-3 with Lopez sitting deepest – Blind gets forward in the manner of an inverted wing-back. Above the back-3, Aleix Garcia who holds his position, switches the ball from side to side. The wingers hug the touchlines, two central midfielders will operate in half-spaces. Dobvyk is the furthest player during attacks. Furthermore, Girona hits counter-attacks, when they win the ball on the break – their counters are fluid counterattacks

In the final third, they mainly worked the ball into the box. When they lose the ball, Michel wants his men to counter-press, to win back the ball quickly in the opposition half. When the goalkeeper catches the ball, he can distribute the ball quickly or after slowing the pace down, through any distribution method.

Out Of Possession

Girona will defend mainly in a 4-4-2 shape. The wingers will form a 4-man midfield with Garcia and Herrera, while Ivan Martin and Dovbyk will lead the pressing lines – This kind of defensive shape is not possible in FM24, only a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 shape can be achieved. Michel wants his defenders to stay compact, forcing opponents outside rather than inside. The defensive players also step up the defensive line often, to compress the opponent’s attackers forcing them to lose possession higher up. Finally, the fullbacks will try to close down closes.

They will press opponents higher, at a much more often pressing intensity – plus they press to close down the goalkeeper’s distribution. The line of engagement is higher and they will press opposition immediately, they make the first pass inside their box. The defensive line will be much higher. The video below shows their defensive shapes.

Role Selections

Gk

The goalkeeper, Gazzaniga is a sweeper keeper on support duty.

CDs

David Lopez and Eric Garcia are ball-playing defenders but on cover and defence duties respectively. David Lopez will stay behind the defensive line, to mark attackers and close down them down, while Eric Garcia will stay within the defensive line, to carry out his defensive duties. The two will turn the defence via diagonal passes to higher positioned teammates, to initiate attacks.

Daley Blind is a wide centre-back on support duty. He will form a back-3 with David and Eric, then get forward in the manner of an inverted wing-back. When the left winger is not on the flank, Blind will spread wide at the left flank. I use Miguel Gutierrez as a wide centre-back on attacking duty.

FBs

Couto is a complete wing-back on support duty. He will have the freedom to roam from his positions often and then cross the ball often from the byline in transition. Couto will also provide the team with extra width at the right flank, making overlapping runs in the final third.

DM

Aleix Garcia is a deep-lying playmaker on defence duty. Without the ball, He holds his position at deeper positions and offers an outlet for recycling possession at the midfield. With the ball while in transition, Garcia will be dictating tempos and supporting offensive teammates with diagonal passes from deeper positions.

CMs

Ivan Martin and Yanel Herrera are mezzalas on attacking and support duties respectively. During the team’s transitions, he will drift wide and in half-spaces acting as a half-winger/half-midfielder. In the final third, They will always make themselves available inside the box, to find scoring opportunities. Due to Ivan Martin being on attacking duties, he will focus on the attacking phase of the game, which is also the reason why he leads the pressing lines with the striker.

Ws

Savio is an inside forward on support duty. He will stay wider at the left wing, ready to cut inside and run at the centre of opposition defenders to cause problems in the final third. Savio will also shoot from a distance often and roam from his position.

Tsygankov is an inverted winger on support duty. He will stay wider during attacks, looking to receive the ball and cut inside with his left foot into the final third, while creating space for Couto to exploit the right flank.

CF

Dovbyk is a target forward on attacking duty. When Girona are in attacking transition, He will sit on the shoulder of the last defender, to attack through balls played behind. Dovbyk will receive and guard it with his physique, before laying it off to teammates.

Team Mentality

I use a positive mentality at Home except against tougher teams, where I will switch to an attacking mentality.

Then on Away matches, I always switch to a balanced mentality.
