In this post, I will discuss Gerardo Seoane 4-2-3-1 Tactic with Borussia Monchengladbach this season. This is Gerardo Seoane’s second season as Borussia Monchengladbach’s head coach, since his appointment in June 2023. In his first season, he finished 14th on the 23/24 Bundesliga table, 1 point above the relegation zone.
Die Fohlen seems to be doing better this season, as they are currently 8th on the Bundesliga table after 19 games. For the tactical aspect, Gerardo Seoane uses a 4-2-3-1 tactic, as his main tactical weapon so far. With no further ado, let’s get into the details of the tactic.

In Possession
Borussia Monchengladbach starts plays mostly from behind, but the goalkeeper sometimes takes long kicks, when they are under pressure. During the build-up phase, Elvedi and Itakura spread inside the box. Reitz and Weigl form double pivots outside the box, while the fullbacks spread wide at the flanks.

Die Fohlen use the sides of the field to focus their plays. Monchengladbach’s passing directness is shorter passes at slightly higher tempo ball movement. As the team approaches the final third, they either look for overlaps or underlaps on both sides of the pitch. Lastly, the players have the creative freedom to be more expressive than disciplined.
In Transition
In attacking transition, the attacking width is fairly wide. Moreover, Seoane’s men hit counterattacks on the break. In the final third, they can hit early crosses, shoot on sight and work the ball into the box.

When the German side loses possession while in transition, they either counter-press to win it back immediately or regroup to their half. Lastly, the goalkeeper, Nicolas mostly rolls out the ball.
Out Of Possession
In the defensive phase of the game, Die Fohlen defends in a 4-4-2 shape and they trap the opponent’s attackers outside than inside, forcing them to use the flanks to attack. Moreover, Seoane allows his fullbacks and wingers to try closing down crosses from the flanks.

In the pressing strategy, Borussia Monchengladbach employs a higher line of engagement and a higher defensive line. They drop off the defensive line more, to reduce the vulnerability of leaving space behind their goal. Lastly, the pressing intensity is set at a more often intensity.
