FM26 Vincent Kompany 4-2-3-1 Tactic with Bayern Munich

Here’s FM26 Vincent Kompany 4-2-3-1 Tactic. Personally, Bayern Munich has been the best team in Europe this season. Vincent Kompany is doing a spectacular job with the team, playing 16 games and winning all of them, including the games against the World champions, Chelsea and European champions, PSG.

Even though the two best stars, Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, have been injured before the start of the season, Bayern Munich does not seem to be missing them. One Shocker for me in Bayern Munich is how Gnabry executes that no 10 role beautifully, given that he is not a no.10.

In possession, Bayern Munich’s shape is a 4-2-3-1, but when out of possession, their shape becomes a 4-4-2 with Gnabry and Kane being the first of the press. With no further ado, let’s get into the details of the team.

In Possession

Bayern Munich’s build-up strategy is to play through the press often, rather than bypassing the press. Die Roten also take short goalkicks often. While taking short goalkicks, Jonathan Tah and Upamecano stay inside the box. Stanisic and Laimer stay wide on both flanks. Joshua Kimmich and Goretzka form double pivots outside the box.

After the buildup, they progress through the flanks of the field, more than through the middle. The passing directness of Bayern Munich is shorter, and the tempo is lower while dominating the possession of the game. As they approach the opposition box, Die Roten look for underlaps on both sides of the field.

Their attacking width is much wider. Their attacking transition is to hold shape when they win the ball on the break and patiently build up attacking plays. Kompany’s men work the ball into the box and also encourage shooting from distance.

Out Of Possession

Their out-of-possession shape is 4-4-2, where Gnabry, the attacking midfielder and Harry Kane, the striker, are the first line of the defence. Kompany wants his men to invite crosses more by staying compact, which pushes the opposition attacks wider. Their defensive transition is counterpress most of the time, to recover the ball in higher positions.

In the pressing strategy, Bayern Munich presses with a much more often pressing intensity. The line of engagement is higher, plus the defensive line is much higher. Lastly, their pressing trap is to trap the opposition outside rather than inside, plus they disrupt the opposition goalkeeper’s short distributions.

Formation Lineup

Role Selections

Gk

In possession, Neuer is a ball-playing goalkeeper, but a sweeper keeper when the team is out of possession.

CDs

In possession, Jonathan Tah and Upamecano are ball-playing centre defenders. The two are comfortable with the ball on their feet, which also aids the team’s possession plays. They can also switch the ball side to side, especially Upamecano.

Out of possession, Tah is a stopping centre back, while Upamecano is more like a cover centre back. Tah moves above the defensive line to close down the opposition attacks, while Upamecano stays behind the defensive line to cover spaces behind.

FBs

In possession, Stanisic and Laimer are fullbacks. Stanisics stays wide while Laimer can stay wide or sit narrower during attacks, running down the flanks to put crosses into the box.

Out of possession, Stanisic and Laimer are fullbacks. They track back to protect the sides of the defence, marking opposition wingers or fullbacks.

DMs

In possession, Joshua Kimmich is a deep-lying playmaker, while Goretzka/Pavlovic is a box-to-box midfielder. Kimmich dictates tempo, switches plays and creates attacking opportunities from deeper positions. Kimmich is the key man in the midfield, almost every passes flow through him. Goretzka pushes further, arriving late into the box to see the end of an attack.

Out of possession, Kimmich is a screening defensive midfielder, while Goretzka is more like a pressing defensive midfielder. Kimmich protects the midfield against counters and defends the space in front of the defenders. Goretzka pushes forward to press the opposition, especially during counterpress.

AM

Serge Gnabry is an attacking midfielder. He operates higher up the pitch to receive passes in the pocket of spaces and can also drop deep or move to the flanks. Gnabry has the freedom to roam from his position.

Out of possession, Gnabry is a centre forward. He can track back to help the defensive midfielders and sometimes leads the pressing line of the team.

Ws

In possession, Diaz is a winger, while Michael Olise is an inside winger. Diaz stays wide on the left flank to receive the ball and cut inside from the flank. Olise drifts inside to receive the ball, creating space for the fullbacks to exploit the flank. Olise has the freedom to roam from his position.

Out of Possession, Diaz and Olise are tracking wide midfielders, tracking back to protect the sides of the defence, aiding the fullbacks.

CF

In possession, Harry Kane is a deep-lying forward. He always drops deep from his position, to help overload the midfield, and setup attacks before arriving late into the box.

Out of possession, Harry Kane is a tracking centre forward. He tracks back to support the midfielders in defensive situations.

Team Mentality

At Home, I use a positive mentality no matter the opponent.

On Away, a balanced mentality works better, but if I concede early while facing a less difficult team, I switch to a positive mentality.
