After Andrea Pirlo was sacked as Juventus head coach, Igor Tudor who was his assistant was also dismissed. On 14 September 2021, Tudor was appointed as Verona’s new head coach, replacing Eusebio Di Francesco. Since his appointment, the 3-4-2-1 tactic has been his tactical weapon which I chose to recreate in FM22. With no further ado, let’s get into the details of the Croatian boss tactic: Igor Tudor 3-4-2-1 tactic.

Igor Tudor 3-4-2-1 Tactic: Tactical Strategies

Build Up

The Croatian boss prefers his men to play out of defence mostly, but when the team are facing tougher teams or when they are under pressure, the goalkeeper takes more direct kicks. However, when they play out of defence, they do it in a 3-4-3 – but in FM22, it is usually in 2-1-1-3-3. The picture below represents the team build phase in FM22.

As the yellow and blues progress their plays, they can use the centre of the field or through the flanks to focus their plays. Moreover, Tudor’s side can be direct or patient in their plays which is why I set the passing directness to be standard – plus they do pass the ball into an open space.

Attacking

In the attacking phase, Verona uses a wide attacking width. The attacking transitions are quick at higher tempos and the team is deadly on the break – which they always go for counterattacks on the break. Moreover, the players have the freedom to interchange positions to confuse the defenders by being expressive from their positions.

As the team approaches the final third, The Croatian boss prefers his men to look for overlaps on both sides of the pitch. Lastly, they prefer to work their way into the opposition’s box.

Defending

In the defensive phase, they defend in a 5-2-3 or 5-4-1 shape. The yellow and blues employ narrow defensive width to keep opponents outside at wider positions – which is now very common in today’s football. Moreover, when Verona loses the ball, they either regroup to form a wall at their own half or they counter press to win back possession.

For the pressing strategy, Tudor wants his players to press the opponents at a more often trigger press intensity. They use a higher line of engagement and a higher defensive line to support the press. At times, they try to close down opposition goalkeeper distribution.

Team Mentality

At Home, an attacking mentality works best while at Away, a balanced mentality works best
