FM23 Direct Counter Attack Tactics | FM23 Classic 4-4-2 with Bologna

Since I have concluded my Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 tactical series, which ended with Moroccan tactics. I will continue with my FM23 Custom Tactics series while waiting for the European football leagues to restart, which means from now until the resumption of the leagues I will be dropping more custom tactics to keep you entertained. The last custom tactic I made was custom fluid counterattack tactics, this time I will look into the custom FM23 direct counter attack tactic.

FM23 defines a direct counterattack as “ a tactic that draws the opposition forward to leave them vulnerable on the break. Players will look to move the ball forward as quickly as possible on the counterattack to exploit space in behind”. Just like the other custom tactics I have done so far in FM23, this tactic is equally of two versions:

• Classic 4-4-2 version

• Asymmetric 4-1-3-2 version (4-4-2)

The classic 4-4-2 version will be discussed in this article while the asymmetric will be discussed in the next article. While I was creating the tactic, I first used it with Salernitana but I wasn’t satisfied with the performance, so I switched to Bologna which gave me satisfying results as my team are currently 4th in the Serie A table after 19 matches. Teams that I feel this tactic might be successful with are Juventus, Atl Madrid, Villarreal, Crystal Palace, Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan.
