New Carlo Ancelotti 4-4-2 Diamond Tactic with Real Madrid | FM23 2023-24 Season
Here’s the new Carlo Ancelotti 4-4-2 Diamond Tactic with Madrid. Real Madrid has been on the perfect start to the season, winning 3 out of their 3 league matches. They still don’t have a world-class striker, which is weird for a team like theirs. It seems they are doing just fine with Bellingham stepping up to the task, netting 4 goals in 3 matches.
The tactic, Ancelotti adopted is the 4-4-2 diamond tactic, which I predicted that he would use in the absence of a world-class striker – you can compare this tactic with my predicted Real Madrid tactic ahead of this season. In the tactic, Rodrygo and Vinicius lead the attacking lines with Bellingham behind them. With no further ado, let’s get into the details of the tactic, shall we?

In Possession
They start plays by building up from behind, but the goalkeeper can still take a direct kick when the pressure is too much. During build-up play, the central defenders, Alaba and Rudiger will drop close to the goalkeeper inside the box. While the fullbacks, Fran Garcia and Carvajal, will stay wide and ready to attack. Tchouameni dropped close to the box, while Camavinga and Valverde formed double pivots above him.
In the approach play, Ancelotti prefers his team to focus plays mainly through the sides of the field, rather than the middle of the field. Los Blancos prefers to dominate the possession, through shorter passing directness. Their tempo will remain higher just like last season, plus their creative freedom will be expressive. Lastly, Los Blancos will either prefer to look for overlaps or underlaps on both sides of the pitch.

In Transition
The attacking width is fairly wide. During attacks, Fran Garcia and Carvajal will provide width at the opponent’s half, with the Carvajal having the freedom to roam. Vinicius will stay wider close to the left flank, while Rodrygo or Bellingham position higher. Rodrygo can also operate as a partial right winger during the attacks.
Counterattacks are essential in their tactics and the counters are mainly fluid counterattacks. In the final third, Los Blancos works the ball into the box. When they lose the ball, Real Madrid can regroup to their own half or counter press to win back the ball quickly, like they did last season. The goalkeeper will distribute the ball quickly, by rolling it out to the defenders and fullbacks.

Out Of Possession
Real Madrid can defend in a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 shape. Defending compactly is also implemented in the team’s defensive strategy, which forces the opponents wider. The defensive players will also step up the defensive line, to compress the opponent’s attackers forcing them to lose possession higher up.
They will press opponents higher, at an aggressive pressing intensity. The line of engagement will be higher. The defensive line will be much higher.

New Carlo Ancelotti 4-4-2 Diamond Tactic | Formation Lineup

GK
In the three matches so far, Arribalaga and Lunin are goalkeepers on support duty.

CDs
Alaba and Rudiger are ball-playing defenders on stopper duties. The centre defenders will be ball-playing defenders on stopper duties. They would move above the defensive line to close down attackers and break up attackers.

FBs
Garcia will be a wing-back on support duty. During attacks, he would hug the left wing, looking to beat his marker and cross the ball often. In a defensive situation, he will track back to protect the left flank.

Carvajal is a complete wing-back on support duty. He will stay wider during attacks, and look to make runs down the right flank down the right flank. Carvajal will also have the freedom to roam from his position often.
DM
Tchouameni is a deep-lying playmaker on defence duty. He can dictate tempo, intercept passes, close down opponents and turn the defence into attack. In the defensive situations, Tchouameni will close down attacks and recycle possessions.

CMs
Camavinga will pick the role of a carrilero. He will cover the wide area, combining defensive responsibilities with attacking contributions. Camavinga will track back and provide defensive cover in the left flank. Due to him being a creative player, He would take risky passes often and tackle the opponents well.

Fede Valverde is a box-to-box midfielder. He will contribute greatly to the defensive and attacking Due to the tactic lacking a right winger, He will have to drift wide and run wide with the ball. Valverde will also shoot on sight often and take risky passes to support high-positioned teammates.
AM
Jude Bellingham is a traditional attacking midfielder on support duty. He will drop short from his position linking the midfield to attack and fashion chances for himself and others in the final third. With the ball, Bellingham can dribble his way into the final third, from the central midfield position.

CFs
Rodrygo will operate as a trequartista. He will be more advanced than Vinicius. He has to lead the attacking lines as a striker and also operates as an attacking midfielder sometimes. Rodrygo is also creative and will also bring teammates into players. Joselu when introduced will be a target forward.

Vinicius is a complete forward on support duty. He drops short from his position to pick up the ball and dribble his way into the final third. Vinicius will also prefer to stay wide like a partial left winger and cut inside with the ball.

Team Mentality
I use a positive mentality at Home except against Barcelona, I will switch to an attacking mentality and in the UCL against tougher opponents.
Then on Away matches, I always switch to a balanced mentality.
